You already have more clues than you think. A practical way to read her taste — and choose a ring she'll still love in thirty years.

Choosing an engagement ring in secret is the only significant purchase most people make for someone else. The good news is that the person you're buying for has been leaving evidence for years — you only have to read it.

Start with the jewellery she already wears

Open her jewellery box and look for patterns rather than pieces. Is everything yellow gold, or is it all cool white metal? Are the pieces delicate and fine, or bold and architectural? Does she wear the same three things constantly, or rotate statement pieces?

Someone who wears fine chains and small studs every day will usually be happiest with a slim band and a clean setting. Someone with a drawer of strong, sculptural pieces can carry a wider band, a halo, or an unusual stone shape beautifully.

Choose the metal first

Metal is the fastest decision and the one she'll notice most, because it has to sit against everything else she owns. Platinum and white gold suit cool skin tones and modern, minimal wardrobes. Yellow gold reads warm, classic and increasingly popular. Rose gold is romantic and flattering on most skin tones, and pairs well with vintage-inspired detailing.

If she wears a mix, ask which piece she'd never take off — and match that.

Match the shape to the hand and the personality

Round brilliants are the most popular for good reason: maximum sparkle, endlessly wearable, never dated. Oval and pear shapes elongate the finger and feel a little more individual. Emerald and Asscher cuts trade sparkle for clean geometry and quiet confidence. Cushion cuts sit somewhere between vintage softness and modern brilliance.

For someone active or hands-on at work, consider a lower profile and a more protective setting — a bezel or a well-designed claw setting will survive daily life far better than a very high crown.

Getting the size right without giving it away

Borrow a ring she wears on the relevant finger and bring it in; we can measure it in minutes. Failing that, a friend or family member with the same hand size is often the safest route. Most rings can be adjusted afterwards, but it's easier — and kinder to the design — to start close.

When in doubt, design it together

There is no rule that says the ring must be a total surprise. A growing number of our clients propose with a beautifully presented placeholder, then design the final piece together. It removes all the risk and turns the ring into a shared memory rather than a guess.
